The Staff
Melton College has always been a family school. It was founded in 1962 by Finn and Elizabeth Hjort. Since then it has evolved into one of the most respected language schools in the UK.
Andrew Hjort
Principal
Andrew has been Principal since January 2003, having worked at Melton College since 1986, becoming Director of Studies in 1993. He studied Philosophy and Linguistics at University College, Bangor, where he did research on the use of essays in placement tests. He also studied teaching English as a second or foreign language, during which time he worked in Birmingham and Valencia (Spain).
Elizabeth Hiley
Emeritus Principal
Elizabeth Hiley was born in Leeds. She studied French and English Literature at Trinity College, Dublin. After university, Elizabeth taught English language and literature in Normanton before founding Melton College with her husband in 1962.
Katie Davis
IELTS and College Administrator
Katie has always lived in York, and likes to explore the city in her free time. Katie has travelled extensively throughout South-East Asia, finding Vietnam to be her favourite country because of its beautiful scenery, diverse culture and friendly people. Katie is interested in cinema, comedy, current affairs and music, and likes to socialise with her friends. When she has the time, Katie enjoys charity fundraising and has recently done a parachute jump for Cancer Research UK in the Lake District.
Hil Gurney
Head of Student Services
Hil (short for Hilary) started working at Melton College in May 2011. She is Head of Student Services and is responsible for student welfare.
Kevin Hauxwell
Teacher
Before entering the English teaching profession in 2005, Kevin practised Law after being called to The Bar in October 2000.
Tim Ashurst
Academic Manager
Tim was born in Leicestershire and went to university in Yorkshire gaining a BA (Hons) in Historical and Political Studies. After teaching in Turkey for two years he went on to teach and manage in a school in Trieste, Italy. In his free time he enjoys reading, writing, travelling, playing rugby and studying history.
Judith Greenall
Teacher
Judith graduated from the University College of Ripon and York St John in 1999, with a BA (Honours) in English Studies. She later went on to obtain a Masters degree in Literature Studies in 2004. Judith has worked as an English teacher in Poland and China.
Dawn Genner
Teacher
Dawn is originally from Brighton, in the south-east of England. She moved to York in 2006 and studied at York St John University for her undergraduate degree in English Language and Linguistics and postgraduate degree in TESOL . In her free time, Dawn enjoys reading, writing poetry, socialising with her friends and experimenting with cooking international meals. Dawn also works as an IELTS invigilator and marker.
Agnes Wawrzynska
Principal's Assistant
Originally from Poland; Agnes loves travelling, meeting new people all around the world and learning about their culture and from their culture. Agnes left Poland with a BA degree in Finance and Information Systems and went to live and work in the Republic of Ireland.
Denise Lloyd
Principal's Personal Assistant
Denise’s role is to support the Principal with the daily management and the smooth running of the College office. This may include support with daily administration, welcoming of students and their general wellbeing and assisting group leaders/organisers where needed.
