Students receive either 15 hours of tuition each week (General English A) or 22.5 hours of tuition each week (General English B). (General English A does not run during the period covered by the Summer Course.)
Melton College welcomes students throughout the year except for two weeks over Christmas. Our General English Courses are aimed at adults who want to improve their language skills for educational or professional purposes. Our programme includes a balance of grammar, speaking, reading, listening and writing. Every student is assigned a personal tutor to monitor progress and to offer encouragement and advice. These tutorials are included in the fees but we do not count them as tuition time! Your tutor will help you plan your study and tailor your learning to suit your needs, this will especially focus on your Melton E-learning account. Many of our students go on to take an IELTS exam (Melton College is the only IELTS centre in York) in order to continue their studies at a British university.
General English A: Half-day programme
For students who do not have the time to follow the full day General English Course programme, we offer a 15 hours tuition per week alternative. Minimum age is 18. Please note this course does not run during the period of the Summer Course (24th June – 2nd September 2018).
General English B: Full-day programme
Our programme includes a balance of grammar, speaking, reading, listening and writing. Students receive 22.5 hours tuition each week. In addition to the morning tuition, a carefully structured afternoon programme includes extra reading, listening practice, speaking skills (including student-led presentations) and study skills to help you make the most of your course. (During the summer, General Course students may share classes with the older Summer Course students. Minimum age is 16. However, students aged 16-17 cannot join the General English Course during the summer, unless their course is finishing after the summer.)
Like all Melton College courses, the tuition times are teaching time and do not include breaks, tutorials or preparation.
All General English Course students can use the Melton College Guided e-learning system. This virtual environment helps students plan their studies, contact other students and participate in the College’s social life. Students continue to have access to the system for 3 months after their departure.
