Some things to see in Leeds:
Liverpool-Leeds Canal
Leeds in connected to Manchester and Liverpool by a canal which crosses the Pennines, a range of hills between Yorkshire and Lancashire. To travel between Leeds and Manchester by train, it would take approximately one hour, but by boat on the canal you would need 45 hours! This is because you have to pass through 91 locks, special gates which control the water level and allow boats to travel through hills.
Leeds Corn Exchange
Before Leeds became a big city famous for its shopping arcades, the area relied on farming to generate wealth. The Corn exchange used to be where farmers from the region brought their crops, such as wheat and maize (also called corn), to trade and sell, making as much money as possible. Today, the Corn Exchange is home to many independent stores selling vintage clothing and unique products. Don’t miss it!
Victoria and Thornton’s Arcades
Leeds has been a popular shopping destination for more than 100 years. Thornton’s Arcade is a very good example of a typical, northern English shopping arcade. It is quite narrow with small shops and a simple design. Victoria Arcade is very different. Queen Victoria, who ruled England from 1837-1901, asked one of her favourite architects to design and create a new arcade in Leeds in the same style as arcades found in Knightsbridge, a rich area of London. This meant that big fashion designers were accessible in the north of England for the first time. You will notice that the design of Victoria arcade is much grander than Thornton’s Arcade, with grand ceilings and intricate patterns.
Kirkgate Market
One of the largest indoor markets in Europe, Kirkgate is a shopper’s paradise from fresh food, drink and fashion to jewellery, flowers, hardware and haberdashery. Founded in 1857, the market is home to some of the most characterful traders in the city, with businesses spanning generations and representing a wide range of nationalities. It is also where the iconic British department store, Marks and Spencer’s, began, as a stall selling goods for a penny – a kind of Victorian pound shop!
Leeds Art Gallery
Leeds Art Gallery is a free attraction in the heart of Leeds City Centre. The gallery collection has a wide range of modern and contemporary art. Be sure to check out the stunning surroundings of the Victorian Tiled Hall café.
Trinity Shopping Centre
Trinity is the city’s biggest shopping and leisure centre with over 120 shops, cafes, bars, and restaurants. Housed under a giant iconic glass roof, Trinity Leeds is located in the heart of the city and offers three floors of top-notch retail therapy.
