Preparing for your stay at Melton College
All of us at Melton College look forward to meeting you and our other Gold Course participants. We hope you will find the information on these pages helpful!
Just in case
Insurance is important just in case you lose something, or your plane is late or if something unexpected happens.
We can provide this (follow the link for details). The insurance should cover cancellation, travel disruption, baggage and medical cover in the UK.
You can only enter the UK with a passport
Make sure your passport is up to date and will not expire before or during your course
Please check the expiry! Also, take a couple of photocopies of the photo page of the passport.
Please us know when you are coming
Please let us have your flight details!
Click the link below and complete the form. This is important, especially if you have booked a taxi or are using our transfer service.
Time to fly
Welcome to England! Here are a few things to remember.
Have your passport ready. If you have booked a taxi or to join our transfer service, we will send you the information in advance.
If there is a problem, ring that person, or you can contact the College on +44 7702596819
Have you got everything?
If you are sure your luggage is not going to arrive, go to the baggage desk and tell them. The vital thing is to report it before going through security. You will be asked to describe your luggage and to show the luggage tag (usually stuck on the back of the Boarding Pass).
One good idea is to take a photo of the luggage at check-in, you can then show the official the photo. It is also a good idea to have your own luggage tag with your name and Melton College on it. This will help with identification. Finally. If you have an iPhone, you can buy an air tag and put it in the luggage!
Hello!
You may be making your own way to York. If you have booked a taxi, or to join our transfer service, the person meeting you will be waiting outside the security area. As soon as you walk though the doors, start looking for someone with the Melton College logo on a sign. If you cannot see them, go to the information desk and ask them to put out an announcement. Do not go outside the building!
The airport can be really busy with lots and lots of signs. The best advice is go slowly, look carefully, as others meet their drivers the numbers will go down and it will be easier to see.
If travelling to York by transfer or taxi, the journey to York will take about 90 minutes to 2 hours depending on the time of day and the traffic. If you are sharing a transfer, it may take slightly longer as you might not be the first to be dropped off. It's not a long journey but it is a good idea to use the toilets at the airport as the transfer will not be stopping. Remember to wear your seat belt!
Where are you staying?
Most of our Gold Course participants either stay in homestay or in one of the rooms in our lovely boutique hotel, Melton Guest House, which is in the building next to the College!
The next few pages are about being a guest at Melton Guest House, if you are with a homestay host, or making your own arrangements, please skip forward!
Our very own hotel!
Melton Guest House is in the building next to Melton College. The gardens are linked so you can move from one to the other without going out onto the street.
We have some lovely rooms! We cannot promise you will be in Room 12, shown in the photo but we have single, twin, double and family rooms available.
Eat in (or out)
We provide a continental breakfast and a two-course evening meal.
Of course, you can eat out if you wish. Please let us know well in advance if you have a special diet or any food allergies/
Welcome!
You may be nervous about meeting new people but don't worry! Many of our hosts have welcomed lots and lots of guests and they will do their best to make you feel welcome.
In your room
You will have a single room but, unless arranged in advance, you will probably be sharing the bathroom and toilet with the hosts.
If there is another participant in a second room, they will speak a different language.
In your suitcase
Clothes, including a waterproof coat, shoes you will be happy to walk in for an hour. In the bathroom, toothbrush, toothpaste and haircare products. Your host will provide you with a towel.
Remember, you will also need a suitable electronic adaptor. It is much easier to buy this from a local electrical store in your country.
For a few little extras
Almost everywhere now accepts debit and credit cards, as well as phone payment (e.g. Apple Pay). In fact, some shops no longer accept cash!
The College café can accept card payments so a debit card is a good alternative to cash. If you are bringing cash, try to get small notes (maximum £10) as these will be easier to change. Please also remember that bank notes and coins do go out of date! Follow the link for more information.
Likes and dislikes
Tell your host what you like and do not like to eat. Tell them if there are things which worry you - e.g. spiders
When/What
Find out when your hosts eat their meals. Ask about safety - things like locking doors and windows. Find out if there are extra safety rules if the host has small children
We eat our evening meal earlier than almost any other country!
Coming to school
Your host may come with you or they may just give you directions.
Not all hosts bring the students on the first day but they will all help with clear directions. If you have a data allowance on your phone it is a good idea to mark the location of the homestay and the College. You can also make your location visible to the host and the College if you need our help!
We drive on the left
This is really important!! For most of you, we drive on the other side of the road. Be very careful and remember to look right first. If possible, use a pedestrian crossing
This is the most important thing in this presentation. Unless you are from Japan, you will be from a country which drives on the other side of the road
A bit like school!
OK, it's been a few years since you had a school bag, but you will need to bring Pens, pencils etc
A school bag is good (also good as hand luggage) as we give each student an A4 size file for their work.
Leave your passport in your bedroom!
In the UK you do not need formal ID. Leave your passport in your bedroom, somewhere safe and only take it out when it is time to go back to the airport
Put your passport in a drawer in your bedroom and leave it there until it is time to return to the airport!
Time to meet the others
Aim to be at College at about 0900. Your first activity starts at 0915.
We officially open at 0830 but there is almost always someone in the College from 0800.
Time for a quick test!
On your first morning we will talk to you and the other new Gold Course participants, and decide what level you will be in.
We might also contact you in advance for a quick video call. We will also give you an introduction to the College and we will check we have contact information in case there are problems.
