Just in case
Insurance is important just in case you lose something, or your plane is late or if something unexpected happens.
Students under the age of 18 must have travel insurance. We can provide this (follow the link for details). If you buy your own insurance for your child, please send us the details before the start of the course. The insurance should cover cancellation, travel disruption, baggage and medical cover in the UK.
You can only enter the UK with a passport
Make sure your passport is up to date and will not expire before or during your course
With younger students, particularly with the two-year interruption of COVID, it is easy to forget that passports do not last for ever! Please check the expiry! Also, take a couple of photocopies of the title page of the passport. Keep one and give the other to your child to keep with their other papers.
If you are under 18 you need your parents permission to travel
We have a permission to travel form which your parents can download and complete. It will help you get through the airport as quickly as possible. Keep it with your passport and be ready to show it.
Download our Travel Permission document and complete all the blank fields. Make sure you sign it! Again, keep a copy for your records.
We need your parents permission
We will ask you what you want to do as much as we can but some decisions need to be made by your parents, or by us acting for your parents. This is all in the Parental Consent form.
This is a really important document which we need as part of our commitment to the students' safety. It covers lots of things, including health, travel, use of images. Open sign and send our Parental Consent form. It is a good idea to print a copy for your records
Time to fly
Welcome to England! Airports can be crowded, confusing places so here are a few things to remember.
If this is your child's first time alone in a big airport it can be worrying. Airports are very safe environment and, because of the security, it is difficult to go wrong! Encourage your child to follow the signs and to ask officials if they are unsure of anything.
Have your passport and permission to travel ready. We will send the information about your transfer. Make sure you have this ready, as it has the name of the person meeting you
We will send the information about your child's transfer. Make sure they have a copy of this ready, as it has the name of the person meeting them. If there is a problem, ring that person, or you can contact the College on +44 7702596819
Have you got everything?
Sometimes airlines lose or delay your baggage. If you are sure your luggage is not going to arrive, go to the baggage desk and tell them.
This happens! The vital thing is they report it before going through security. They will be asked to describe their luggage and to show the luggage tag (usually stuck on the back of the Boarding Pass). One good idea is to take a photo of the luggage at check in. It your child has difficulty describing the luggage, they can show the official the photo. It is also a good idea to have your own luggage tag with Name and Melton College on it. This will help with identification. Finally. If you child has an iPhone, you can buy an air tag and put it in the luggage!
Hello!
The person meeting you will be waiting outside the security area. As soon as you walk though the doors, start looking for someone with the Melton College logo on a sign. If you cannot see them, go to the information desk and ask them to put out an announcement. Do not go outside the building!
The airport can be really busy with lots and lots of signs. The best advice is go slowly, look carefully, as others meet their drivers the numbers will go down and it will be easier to see. If your child cannot see the driver. Go to the information desk and ask them to put out a call.
The journey to York will take about 90 minutes to 2 hours depending on the time of day and the traffic. If you are sharing a transfer, it may take slightly longer as you might not be the first to be dropped off. It's not a long journey but it is a good idea to use the toilets at the airport as the transfer will not be stopping. Remember to wear your seat belt!
If your child is the last to arrive, they will go straight to the transport. However, they may have to wait for other students on the same or later flights. It is important they stay in the airport. And stay with their luggage. If you have given us permission, we will have put you in contact with the parents of other children on the same flight.
Welcome!
You may be nervous about meeting new people but don't worry! Many of our hosts have welcomed lots and lots of students and they will do their best to make you feel welcome. (Remember contact your parents to say you have arrived!)
Some kids are outgoing, some are shy. Our hosts know this so dont worry. Students can expect a lot of questions about family, brothers and sisters, hobbies etc.
In your room
You may be sharing a room with another student. Remember, this means you are also sharing the facilities, shelves, drawers etc. Get to know your room mate!
The other student will speak a different language but will be a similar age.
In your suitcase
Clothes, including a waterproof coat (it does rain quite often in the UK and the weather does change a lot!). Bring shoes you will be happy to walk in for an hour. In the bathroom, toothbrush, toothpaste and haircare products. Your host will provide you with a towel. Please do not bring a penknife, even a small one.
The main things people forget are; a waterproof jacket, shoes for walking (we do a lot of walking on our activities) and a suitable electronic adaptor. It is much easier to buy this from a local electrical store on your country.
Chocolate and presents!
You are on full-board so will not have to buy anything. However, almost everyone likes chocolate and we have a café selling drinks, chocolate and snacks, as well as College Hoodies and Mascots.
How much pocket money? A really difficult question. The students are on full-board, have transport when they need it and all materials are included. In summer, there are Optional Extra activities. These cost about £12 each. The College café can accept card payments do a debit card is a good alternative to cash. If the student is bringing cash, try to get small noted (maximum £10) as these will be easier to change. We would recommend up to £10 per day for 1~14, up to £15 per day for 13~17 nad up to £20 per day for 16+. Please also remember that bank notes and coins do go out of date! Follow the link for more information.
Don't be shy
Tell your host what you like and dont like to eat. Tell them if there are things which frighten you - e.g. spiders
Again, shy students may need to be encouraged to speak about likes and dislikes.
When/What
Find out when your hosts eat their meals. Ask about safety - things like locking doors and windows. Find out if there are extra safety rules if the host has small children
We eat our evening meal earlier than almost any other country! Homestays with small children will have particular rules about locking doors - or keeping doors shut- and where to keep medicine and make-up.
Coming to school
Your host may come with you or they may just give you directions. Be confident and ask people for help, if you need to.
Not all hosts bring the students on the first day but they will all help with clear directions. If your child has a data allowance on their phone it is a good idea to mark the location of the homestay and the College. They can also make their location visible to you!
We drive on the left
This is really important!! For most of you, we drive on the other side of the road. Be very careful and remember to look right first. If possible, use a pedestrian crossing
This is the most important thing in this presentation. We all know it is really easy to forget and it is usually not the youngest students who have a problem as they tend to be more cautious.
In your school bag
Bring Pens, pencils etc, just like you would for school in your own country
Just like school at home. Feeling happy is easy with familiar things around so whatever they usually take, they can bring - pens, highlighters etc. A school bag is good (also good as hand luggage) as we give each student an A4 size file for their work.
Leave your passport in your bedroom!
In the UK you do not need formal ID. Leave your passport in your bedroom, somewhere safe and only take it out when it is time to go back to the airport
Another one to stress! Put the passport in a drawer in the bedroom and leave it there until it is time to return to the airport!
Time to meet your classmates
First day and you are probably excited but a little nervous. Aim to be at College at about 0900. Your first activity starts at 0930.
We officially open at 0830 but there is almost always someone in the College from 0800.
Time for a quick test!
On your first morning you will do a placement test to find out what level you will be in. Please don't worry! The test is for us to be able to help you learn as much as possible
We divide students by ability and by age, trying, as far as possible, to put them into a group with similar students. We will also give the students an introduction to the College and we will check we have contact information in case there are problems.
We are here to help you!
We are here 24/7! We have an emergency number 07702596819 and you can ring us at any time. Our Safeguarding Officer, Jake will meet you on your first day and is available to talk to you if you are worried about anything. You can also speak to Denise, or to Andrew
Of course, they can ring you and you can ring us. Whatever helps them to feel confident. We have male and female welfare staff and, after nearly 60 years, there are few things we will not have heard before. Our female staff also have a supply of sanitary products in the office.
