A traditional English recipe

Nothing is more British than an afternoon tea, complete with scones!
Follow a classic English recipe to learn how to make scones, then enjoy them freshly baked with a cup of tea in our gorgeous Melton Guest House dining room.
Two truly beautiful towns.
18th May 2024
Knaresborough is a pretty market town with a castle and a famous bridge crossing the river Nidd. Harrogate is a charming spa town with some good shopping and a famous tea room!
Knaresborough is full of surprises, a warren of medieval streets and stone staircases that weave their way up and down the hill and a castle that looks out over a river and an iconic viaduct. Harrogate has the faded beauty of a Victorian spa town, once a popular resort of the well-to-do of Europe.

England's finest city walls
20th May 2024 at 14:00
York has some of the finest city walls in Europe and they provide great views of the city.
Built by the Romans, knocked down by the Vikings, rebuilt by mediaeval Englishmen, the history of York's walls is long, yet they still stand. They encircle the town's mediaeval centre, still following the Roman route. Walking them, we will follow in the footsteps of a thousand years' worth of York people.
Awe-inspiring Gothic wonder
21st May 2024 at 14:30
York Minster is visible from almost anywhere in York, and is one of the city's most famous sights.
York Minster's size - it is the largest mediaeval Gothic Cathedral in Northern Europe - is not its only impressive feature. Its interior houses some of the most important mediaeval stained glass in the world, and it is the cathedral of the second-most important figure in the Church of England, the Archibishop of York.
In the medieval heart of York

A medieval town house in the city's historic centre. Imagine what life was like for the family who lived there during the 13th century.
A painstaking reconstruction of the original, the Hall is divided into rooms, each furnished with authentic ornaments and recreating the style of the era.
Try some local flavour!
23rd May 2024 at 14:30
This is a great chance to try some of our amazing local cheese.
Can you tell your cheddar from your Wensleydale? Cheese has always been a part of English food but many smaller cheeses and cheese makers disappeared in the twentieth century. Thankfully, a resurgence of artisan cheesemaking means that some lovely local cheeses are available again!
The first and still the best
24th May 2024 at 14:30
Famous for being the first of its kind, the Jorvik centre is a great introduction to Viking York.
York was the Capital of Viking Britain and their City was based on the banks of the river. A major excavation in the 1970s uncovered streets, houses and thousands of artifacts, many of which became the basis for the much imitated Jorvik Viking Centre.
A day at the seaside
25th May 2024
Yorkshire has some of the most dramatic coastline in England with long sandy beaches, high cliffs and some beautiful coastal towns and villages.
The coast's highlights are Robin Hood's Bay, a gorgeous cove known for its beauty, fossils and rockpools. We'll also visit Whitby, a fishing town with literary links - it is the place Dracula landed in England after sailing from Bulgaria. Explore these wonderful places, and try some fish and chips while you do!

The Minster may be the largest and greatest of York's churches, but the city's historic centre hides many smaller gems, from an 11th Century church founded by a Norwegian Earl, to one with a 15th Century stained glass window depicting the end of the world. Join us for this tour through some of the prettiest old buildings in the North of England
