Our first stop is Beverley

A Historic Market Town with Timeless Charm

Beverley is a beautiful East Yorkshire market town with roots stretching back over 1,300 years. Its narrow streets, historic landmarks, and vibrant market square make it a perfect place to explore on foot.

Highlights include:

Beverley Minster

One of the largest parish churches in the UK and a stunning example of medieval Gothic architecture. Construction of the present building began in the early 13th century, and it grew to become a major centre of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages. Inside, you’ll see intricately carved misericords from the 16th century, a rare Saxon frith stool (a “peace chair” – anyone who wanted to claim sanctuary from the law would sit on this chair), and the tomb of Lady Eleanor Percy, admired for its richly decorated canopy.

Admission: Free (but we suggest a small donation).
Photography: Generally welcomed, but please be respectful and discreet, especially during services.
What to look out for: The Purbeck marble columns, musician carvings, and the organ above the nave.

The Market Square
At the heart of Beverley, this historic square has been a trading centre since the town’s first charter in 1129. Today, the cobbled square is surrounded by cafés, independent shops, and full of colourful market stalls — including fresh local produce, crafts, and Yorkshire specialties (especially lively on Saturdays).

Admission: Free.
What to enjoy: Traditional Yorkshire treats (look out for Yorkshire Curd Tarts), outdoor seating areas, and the Grade I listed Market Cross (erected in 1714).

Historic Lanes
Beverley’s historic lanes, lined with Georgian and Victorian buildings, are perfect for a gentle stroll. Wander through charming streets like Flemingate and Beckside to discover independent boutiques, galleries, and cozy tearooms.

Admission: Free.
What to enjoy: Local crafts, antiques, and classic British tea rooms.

Useful information:

  • Walking in the town centre is mostly flat and suitable for all levels.
  • Plenty of cafés and tea rooms are available for refreshments.
  • Public toilets and seating areas are spaced throughout the town centre.

Our second stop is Castle Howard

A Stately Home Full of History and Beauty

A short scenic drive from Beverley brings us to Castle Howard, one of England’s most iconic country houses set within spectacular gardens and parkland. The house is fantastic, and the estate grounds and gardens offer plenty to see and enjoy at your own pace.

Highlights include:

The Great Hall & Architecture
The house has been home to the Howard family for over 300 years and is admired for its grand architecture and dramatic interiors.

What to look out for: Classical façades, sweeping staircases, and the towering Great Hall rising 70 feet.

Extensive Gardens and Grounds
Castle Howard’s landscaped gardens stretch across over 1,000 acres with lakes, woodland paths, temples, and statues.

You’ll find:

  • The Walled Garden — with seasonal displays and a variety of planted sections.
  • Temple Terrace and Temple of the Four Winds — scenic views and classical follies.
  • Lakes and fountains, including the impressive Atlas Fountain.
  • Ray Wood, with rhododendrons, Pieris, and wild roses.

Useful information:

  • Toilets, seating areas, and plenty of space to rest are available throughout the site.
  • The estate is large and offers flexible routes so you can explore at your own pace with plenty of time.

Cafés & Restaurants:

  • Courtyard Café: Great for lunches and snacks.
  • Coffee Shop: Ideal for lighter bites and drinks.
  • Boathouse Café / Kitchen: Scenic lakeside setting when open.
  • On-site shops include a Farm Shop, Gift Shop, and Garden Centre.
